6 Things to Consider When Selecting a Replacement Window Company
You’ve decided to replace your home’s windows, now all you need to do is select a company. With so many options to choose from – it can seem a daunting task. Replacement windows are an investment in your home, and we want to help take the guesswork out of selecting the right company for you.
1. Experience and Years in Business
Look for a well-established company with roots in the community. You want a company that you can count on to be there.
2. Affiliations and Accreditations
Select a company that has an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau, is accredited to provide home improvements in your state and a member of remodeling and home improvement organizations. This lends creditability to the company and will give you peace of mind.
3. Reviews, Testimonials, and Pictures
Any company should be proud to show you what past customers have to say about their service and products. Beware of any companies who don’t have this information to provide to you.
In addition to testimonials you also want to look at before and after pictures of past customers. This helps create a visual representation of the quality of the company’s work.
4. Installation Process and Insurance
Verify they are certified by the window manufacturer to install the replacement window. Without this certification, your manufacturer warranty may be void.
Look for companies who have their own employees, not sub-contractors, install the replacement windows.
Ask to see proof of insurance to make sure you and your home is protected while the work is being performed.
5. Warranty
You want to be protected if there is a problem down the road with your replacement windows making it important to understand the type of warranty you receive.
Ask the following questions to make sure you are fully covered:
- Does the warranty cover workmanship and the product?
- It is a full or limited warranty and what part(s) of the product are covered?
- How long is the warranty?
- Is it transferrable?
6. Product
There are many types of replacement windows for you to choose from. Here are some things to look for:
- Energy Star certified
- Energy Efficiency – Look at the NFRC label. Refer to our blog post Window Energy Labels Simplified for tips on what to look for.
- Frame material
- Solid or hollow
- Material type
- Insulation – How is the area around the replacement window insulated?
- Panes of glass
- Low-E coatings
- Gas fills
